How to grow a Banana Tree?

The banana plant is one of the most beautiful and attractive plants to grow in your garden. It is a responsive plant, that with love and care, you will have a luscious tree in no time at all, and will bear fruit which is eatable and sweet tasting.

But to my sadness, I see many backyard plants suffering because of no education or knowledge of how to care for them.  I want to change this so everyone has a chance to produce a magnificent and healthy banana plant.

Tips on how to grow a Banana Tree

Growing Conditions;

Banana Trees prefer a warm sheltered area to grow in. They like plenty of sunlight, and preferably facing northerly aspect.  Banana trees like a warm climate, but can be grown in colder climates.

Soil;

Banana trees like a well drain soil. A good organic soil is ideal for growing bananas in. If the soil is on the poor side, it is best to apply lime around the growing area twice a year.

Planting;

The best time to plant a banana tree, is in spring or early summer. It is best to purchase a banana plant from a high-quality nursery.

Fertilizer;

It is best to fertilize your plant regularly every six to eight weeks.

Watering;

It is critical that you water your banana plant regularly as they are big consumers of water. In warm
to hot weather, water at least every second day, but do not drown the root system.

Growing Time;

It will take anywhere between 9 to 14 months or more to produce a bunch of bananas, depending on growing and weather conditions.

Bunches;

A bunch will merge from the top of the tree. After two weeks it is recommended you put on a banana bunch cover, to protect the fruit from the sun and cold, as well as any pests. It will enhance the colour of your fruit when ripened.
